This is probably the most scenic and most beautiful route to the summit. The 6-day route is, however, more physically challenging than the Marangu route. The day walks are longer and steeper, however the summit night is one hour shorter. The scenic traverse of the Western Breach offers some stunning views. Only tented accommodation is available on this route, which can be less comfortable and will require a good sleeping bag and hiking mattress.
DAY 1: Arusha-Machame Gate to Machame Camp
Machame Camp: 10km
Walking Time: 5-6 hours
After an early breakfast, you will transfer from your hotel to the Machame Gate where, after the registration, you will start with your treck up hill. The trail is winding and leads through the dense mountain forest, passing Halfway Clearing all the way to Machame Camp. A picnic lunch is on the way, then camping overnight at Machame Camp. 3000m
DAY 2: Machame camp to Shira Camp
Shira Camp: 6km
Walking Time: 5-6 hours
After breakfast, continue ascending through rocky ridges to reach Shira Camp where superb views of the Shira Plateau and Mt. Meru can be seen. A picnic lunch is on the way, then camping overnight at Shira Cave Camp. 3840m
DAY 3: SHIRA CAMP OPTION
An extra day and night at Shira camp is an option to help acclimatization, with breakfast, lunch and dinner. Side trips can be taken to Shira Needle or Shira Cone, or just relaxation in the camp.
DAY 3/4: Shira Camp to Barranco Camp
Walking Time: 6-7 hours
After breakfast at Shira Camp, continue trekking on the path which gradually rises towards Kibo Dome. With a picnic lunch on the way, you will pass a junction leading to Arrow Glacier, then reach Barranco Valley and Barranco Camp for overnight camping.
DAY 4/5: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp
After breakfast depart Barranco and continue trekking on a steep ridge passing Barranco Wall and the Karanga Valley to arrive at Barafu Camp for overnight. The peaks of Mawenzi can be observed from this point. You will have a picnic lunch on the way.
DAY 5/6: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak, then Mweka Camp
Uhuru Peak: 17km
Walking Time: 10-13 hours
Start trekking after midnight, passing Stella Point, 5,745m, to conquer Uhuru Peak, the highest point of Africa. YES!!! From the summit, descend to Barafu Campsite then Mweka Campsite for an overnight stay. You will have a picnic lunch on the way.
DAY 6/7: Mweka camp to Mweka Gate, Arusha
Mweka Gate: 9km
Walking Time: 3-4 hours
The day spent on descending to the Mweka Gate where you will be met and transferred back to your hotel in Arusha. DON’T FORGET TO COLLECT YOUR CLIMB CERTIFICATE!!!
